Want to open an office in APAC and wondered "where do I start?" Well read on for five tips on what you need to think about and have ready before you embark on this amazing adventure.

1. Start small, stay focused

Don't boil the ocean and go for everything. Do your homework, research your target market, start with a small subset and keep course correcting as you expand your market. Go for one country at a time, and hire locals in each market.

2. Hire local, and pair with a mentor

Particularly in Asian countries, make sure to hire locals that you can grow to eventually take over each site. Pair them with a mentor right away and make sure to keep communications open all the time. Don't fall prey to the "Out of sight, out of mind" syndrome which is very common.

3. Don't fall prey to "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"

Everyone has goals, month / quarter ends to focus on. But don't forget your new regional office that you have invested in. They have goals too, so make sure to keep them in mind and keep communications crystal clear. And visit them often!

4. Understand cultural ways of doing business

By hiring local talent, you get a head start on understanding how to do business in that country. You will be amazed at how different, vibrant, and rich an experience it can be. Do this right, and you will be there for a long time.

5. Just because this is how you do it in America (or elsewhere) that it will NOT be the way you do it in APAC

Remember the old adage that just because things have been working quite nicely in the USA, that you can simply pick up the same pricing, the way you sell, processes, etc and plonk them in APAC. Sorry, it just won't work. You need to take the time to learn the culture, the people, the way business is done. It is different in just about every way you can imagine. Don't believe us?
